— Elk Horn Road House

The Elk Horn Road House was a tin shed in the middle of a horse paddock when friends Terri Bitton and Julie Taylor took on the lease. We had just returned from a trip to the US, where we had been inspired by the roadhouses we had visited in the Nevada desert.

Food had always been a passion for us, who dreamt of starting a quality coffee and food destination in the country. Wallington was a risky location but local support has been strong since the roadhouse opened in December. Word has since spread to Portarlington, Point Lonsdale, Queenscliff and Geelong.

— History

An extract from Tourists' Guide to Geelong and the Southern Watering Places, published in 1893. "A favorite resort for excursionists, either from Geelong or Ocean Grove, is the fertile valley of Wallington. There is a hotel, store, and post office in one, and for many it has been found a centre of attraction as a wayside house. The principal place of interest is, however, the famous Wallington Gardens, justly popular for the enormous quantity of strawberries, and other fruits. Picnic parties find this a pleasant resort in the season, and being within six miles of Ocean Grove it forms a very agreeable outing for an afternoon. Some very beautiful views of the Lakes are obtained from this locality.

Cobb & Co. supply vehicles of every description at moderate prices, from the cosy two-seated buggy to the heavy American coaches, suitable for parties from six to thirty in number. The usual way in making up such gatherings is to fix the day before who is to go, and gentlemen are generally found staying at the Coffee Palace [Ocean Grove] who willingly make all necessary arrangements whether the destination be Wallington, Drysdale Springs, Point Lonsdale, or boating on the lakes.

— Great Location

We are located about 15km from Queenscliff, a historic seaside village 100 kilometres from Melbourne on the sandy shores of Port Phillip Bay.

Rich history
Reminders of Queenscliff's elegant past are everywhere you look – from imposing Victorian-era hotels, a huge military fortress guarding the entrance to Port Phillip, solid old churches and quaint fishermen's cottages. But there's more to Queenscliff than nineteenth century history. Wander down Hesse Street and discover art galleries, shops and great places to dine.

Village charm
Queenscliff attracts visitors from all points of the compass who come to enjoy the beach, a picnic under the giant foreshore pines, the village charm or even a game of golf.

On the bay
Port Phillip Bay also offers seemingly endless opportunities for water activities. The bay's southern reaches offer some of Australia's best diving on reefs and shipwrecks and fishing from piers, beaches and boats is popular with all ages. Ferries also sail regularly between Sorrento and Queenscliff taking around 40 minutes to transport passengers and their cars from one side of Port Phillip Bay to the other.
